Learn how to install the VAS Kangaroo Mag Panel (Gen 1) on your plate carrier. Step-by-step guide for secure MOLLE attachment with common mistakes to avoid.
Quick Answer
Weave the included MOD straps through your plate carrier's MOLLE rows and the panel's webbing, then secure the elastic retention keeper and adjust the magazine flaps.
Why Use a Kangaroo Mag Panel on Your Plate Carrier
A kangaroo-style mag panel places three magazines close to your chest for faster reloads compared to pouches mounted on the sides. The VAS Gen 1 panel carries two 30-round AK mags and two pistol mags in a single unit, reducing bulk while keeping your reloads predictable.
The trade-off is that the panel adds frontal thickness, which can interfere with prone shooting or snug carrier fit. If you run a tight cummerbund or need to go prone often, test the panel's position before committing to a permanent weave.
What You Need Before Starting
The VAS Kangaroo Mag Panel (Gen 1) comes with two 6-inch MOD straps and an elastic retention keeper. You do not need additional hardware unless your plate carrier has narrow MOLLE slots — in that case, thinner aftermarket straps may help.
Check that your carrier has at least three rows of MOLLE webbing across the front. The panel is 2.5 inches wide and needs two columns of webbing for a stable mount.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
- Position the panel on your carrier: Hold the VAS Kangaroo Mag Panel against the front of your plate carrier where you want it. Center it over your sternum so the two AK mag pouches sit vertically. Mark the MOLLE rows you will use with a piece of tape or a mental note. A common mistake is placing the panel too high, which can interfere with your chin when looking down. Keep it low enough to clear your neck.
- Weave the MOD straps through the MOLLE: Take one 6-inch MOD strap and feed it from behind the carrier's MOLLE webbing, through the top slot of the panel's webbing, then back through the next slot down. Repeat for the second strap on the other column. Pull the straps tight so the panel sits flush against the carrier. Do not cross the straps diagonally — keep each strap in its own vertical column to avoid twisting the panel.
- Secure the elastic retention keeper: Thread the elastic retention keeper through the loop at the bottom of the panel and around the carrier's MOLLE webbing below the pouches. Adjust the tension so it holds the panel snug but still allows you to insert and remove magazines. If the keeper is too loose, the panel will flop during movement. If too tight, it may pull the bottom of the panel away from the carrier.
- Adjust the magazine flaps: The AK mag pouches have adjustable hook-and-loop flaps. Open each flap, insert a 30-round AK magazine, and close the flap over the top. The front pistol mag pouch also has an adjustable flap — insert one pistol magazine and secure it. Make sure the flaps are tight enough to retain the mags during a sprint but loose enough to draw quickly. Test by shaking the carrier.
- Test and fine-tune the fit: Wear the plate carrier and practice drawing and reindexing magazines from all four pouches. If any pouch feels too tight or too loose, adjust the hook-and-loop flap tension or reposition the panel one row higher or lower. A panel that shifts during movement means the MOD straps are not tight enough. Re-weave them with more tension.
